Supreme Court Questions EC’s Citizenship Verification Drive in Bihar

  • The Supreme Court questioned the Election Commission’s Summary Intensive Revision (SIR) drive in Bihar, criticizing its tight deadlines and lack of legal clarity on verifying citizenship. Justice Bagchi noted that documents like Aadhaar prove identity, not citizenship, yet the EC opposes Aadhaar’s inclusion. Petitioners argued the drive targets vulnerable groups and exceeds EC’s legal mandate. They warned of mass disenfranchisement, as most citizens lack valid documents beyond Aadhaar.

India to Set Up Indigenous MRO Facility for S-400 Air Defence System

  • The Defence Ministry has selected an Indian firm to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the Russian-origin S-400 missile system, officially named Sudarshan Chakra. Fast-tracked after Operation Sindoor, where the S-400 played a key role in neutralizing Pakistani aerial attacks, the move strengthens India’s self-reliance in defence under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Russia’s Almaz-Antey will collaborate with the Indian partner. With three S-400s already operational, the remaining two are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027. This step helps India overcome sanctions and ensure supply chain resilience.
