Global Hunger Index 2023

GLOBAL HUNGERINDEX (GHI) 2023:

India ranks 111 out of a total of 125 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023.

Key Highlights:

The index is jointly released by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe every October.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) measures and tracks hunger at global, regional, and national levels, reflecting multiple dimensions of hunger over time.

  • It is calculated using four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting, and infant mortality rate.
  • The GHI score has improved since 2014 but remains at a moderate level.
  • Undernourishment, child stunting, and child wasting are still high.
  • The infant mortality rate has declined but remains high.
  • Climate change, conflict, poverty, and inequality contribute to hunger.
  • More investment in agriculture, social protection, and conflict resolution is needed.
  • A greater focus on addressing the root causes of hunger is needed.
  • Ending hunger requires a concerted global effort.

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is an annual report that measures and tracks hunger at global, regional, and national levels, reflecting multiple dimensions of hunger over time. The GHI is  calculated by combining four indicators:

The GHI score is calculated on a 100-point scale, with 0 representing no hunger and 100 representing the worst level of hunger.

CAUSES:

According to the GHI 2023 report, the stagnation in the fight against global hunger is largely due “to the combined effects of overlapping crises, including:

  • The CoVID-19 pandemic
  • The Russia-Ukraine war
  • Economic stagnation and the impact of climate change.

Government of India Initiatives to Address Hunger Crisis:

Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0: This mission is focused on combating malnutrition among children (0-6 years), adolescent girls (14-18 years), pregnant women, and lactating mothers. It involves a strategic shift in nutrition content and delivery, creating a convergent ecosystem to promote health, wellness, and immunity.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY): Launched in response to the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, PMGKAY aims to alleviate the hardships faced by the poor and needy. It provides essential food assistance to those most affected by the crisis.

Zero Hunger Program: This program, initiated in October 2017, is committed to eliminating hunger and malnutrition in India by 2030. It represents a long-term effort to ensure that no one in the country suffers from hunger and its associated health and social consequences.
