Daily Current Affairs 23rd June: U.S. Strikes Iran, Hormuz Tensions, India’s Quantum Leap & Telangana’s Hydel Push

Explore 23rd June current affairs: U.S. airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, India’s strides in quantum communication, SCCL’s hydel power move, and INS Tamal’s commissioning.

U.S. Strikes Iranian Nuclear Sites, Sparking Fears of Wider Regional Conflict

In a dramatic escalation, the United States launched heavy airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—using 30,000-pound bombs and dozens of missiles. The move, ordered by President Donald Trump without congressional approval, aimed to cripple Iran's nuclear program after months of failed diplomatic efforts.

Trump declared the strikes had “obliterated” key sites, though U.S. officials noted damage assessments were ongoing. Despite the attack, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported no radioactive contamination.

Iran Threatens Closure of Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S. Strikes, Raising Global Oil Concerns

Following the U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, Iran’s parliament (Majlis) has reportedly approved the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a move that could significantly disrupt global oil trade. The final decision rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The Strait handles about 20% of global petroleum shipments, making it critical to countries like India.

India, which imports nearly 80% of its oil, could face supply disruptions. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured that India’s diversified sourcing and strategic reserves would help manage any shocks. OPEC reports indicate the region’s volatility could spike prices globally.

SCCL to Set Up Telangana’s First Pumped Storage Hydel Project at Medipally

The Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) is set to establish Telangana’s first pumped storage hydroelectric power project with a proposed capacity of 500 MW. This move supports a shift away from coal dependency and aligns with sustainability goals outlined by the state government, which holds a 51% stake in SCCL.

The site, a 157-meter deep sump at the Medipally opencast mine, will serve as the lower reservoir. A second upstream reservoir will also be developed, enabling efficient year-round energy storage and production.

India on Track for Satellite-Based Quantum Communication within Five Years

India may achieve satellite-based quantum communication within five years, according to Professor Bhaskar Kanseri of IIT Delhi. His team recently demonstrated India’s longest quantum key distribution (QKD) over a 1 km free-space link—an important step toward secure, hack-proof messaging based on quantum mechanics.

QKD uses photons to transmit encryption keys and offers unmatched security due to its quantum entanglement principles. Satellites are ideal for long-distance QKD due to the limitations of fiber-optic cables. However, atmospheric interference remains a challenge, especially in polluted cities like Delhi. More on this can be explored at IIT Delhi's research hub.

INS Tamal: Last Foreign-Built Warship to Join Indian Navy

The Indian Navy will commission INS Tamal, a stealth multi-role frigate, on July 1 at Kaliningrad, Russia. This marks a significant shift toward naval self-reliance as it will be the last foreign-built vessel for the Navy. It aligns with the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" and "Make in India" goals for defense manufacturing.

INS Tamal is the final ship of the Krivak-class (Tushil class) frigates constructed in Russia. Future vessels of the same class, now termed the Triput class, will be built domestically at Goa Shipyard Ltd., supported by Russian design and technology transfer.
