- Kaans Payri is a solid cylindrical bronze anklet worn by the Bison Horn Maria tribe of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The anklet is cast by local goldsmiths and is mostly worn by married women, as a mark of their marital status. Mothers gift the anklets to their daughters as a wedding gift. “It is a custom that shows the bonding between mothers and daughters. Gifting bangles, nose-pins, toe- rings is considered auspicious. The anklets are ornament that mothers present to their daughters,” said Ashok Sharma, PRO of the museum.
- Sharma said that it is also believed that the heavy weight anklet can provide some relief while moving up and down in the hilly slopes. “After a few years of marriage, or after achieving a certain age, the heavy anklet is it is often replaced by a lighter version. The tribal people of the Bison Horn Maria tribe perform the traditional ‘bison horn’ dance to appease Goddess Shakti and seek her blessings. Women wear the ‘Kaans Payri’ anklet and dress in beautiful traditional attires for the ceremony.”
