Maharashtra: Tribal Farmers Form A Company To Harvest & Sell Medicinal Herbs
- Today we came across an interesting bit of positive news from Pune, Maharashtra; wherein more than 800 tribal farmers have incorporated a company to harvest and sell over 120 exclusive medicinal herb products. Vanarinath Aushadhi Vanaspati Adivasi Farmers Producer Company Limited is the name of the tribal farmers’ company.
- According to the following news-report, more than 800 tribal farmers belonging to Mahadeo Koli and Thakar tribal communities, have established their own private limited company. Ayush Prasad, former project director at Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), informed, “Such produce is only available at Bhimashankar. With their exclusive rights, they (farmers) will surely be benefited.”

- The enterprise will be joined by farmers from Ambegaon, Junnar and Khed taluka of Pune, with the headquarters being located at Nigdale village near Ghodegaon. The company will itself grow the herbs in its nurseries and distribute them to the farmers. It will purchase the raw material and follow the due process — wherein the factories will convert them to powders and seal them hygienically — after which the 120 products will be available in markets around the world under the brand of ‘Maha-tribe’. These products include bedkicha pala (that has been proven useful for diabetic patients), forest ginger (a root that facilitates weight loss), amarkand (a herb to ease spondylitis), rukhala kand (for treatment of piles), nalkand (a balm for acidity), ratan jyot (to treat various eye problems), deshwar (known to soothe cracks on heels), kombadnakha’s leaves (that reduce the inflammation of tonsils), among others. Along with these products, black rice and jungli honey will also be seen on shelves, given a huge demand for the products in Gulf countries and the USA. Other herbs like hirda and behead will also be distributed, for it is much in demand in Italy and Germany.
- “The benefits of these herbs are unknown to the world,” said Deepak Chimte, a local tribal farmer and chairman of the company. “Many of us have traditional knowledge. Now, we will conduct in-depth research with help from experts and explore more opportunities,” he said. Chimte believes that his life is on the brink of change with this initiative. He looks forward to working with more people, to increase the ambit of the firm.
