Tribal group sets example for others in Mulugu

 
  • With the help of TSGCC and ITDA, Eturunagaram, Sri Sammakka-Saralamma JLG, Shivapuram, established the detergent manufacturing plant in December of last year for a cost of Rs 40 lakhs under the MSME program.
  • Mulugu: The Telangana State Girijan Co-operative Corporation Limited has helped a group of ten Adivasi women who formed a Joint Liability Group (JLG) create an example for others by successfully manufacturing and distributing detergent soaps (TSGCC).
  • With the help of TSGCC and the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Eturunagaram, the Sri Sammakka-Saralamma JLG, Shivapuram, in Eturunagaram, established the detergent manufacturing unit in December of last year for a cost of Rs 40 lakhs under the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) scheme.
  • The JLG obtained a loan of Rs 12 lakh (30% of the unit cost), while their personal contribution was Rs 4 lakh. The JLG received a grant of Rs 24 lakh from the Union government, which is 60% of the unit cost (10 percent of the unit cost).
  • The members of the group got training for three months in a detergent manufacturing plant at Jeedimetla in Hyderabad with the assistance of TSGCC before setting up the unit, according to JLG president Dansari Soujanya in an interview with Telangana Today.
  • She stated, “We have so far produced three lakh detergent cakes, and 75,000 of them have already been sold to tribal Ashram schools and hostels under the jurisdiction of the ITDA, Utnoor, ITDA, Eturunagram, and ITDA, Bhadarachalam.” She continued by saying they sell a 150 gram bar of soap to the TSGCC for Rs. 9, and the corporation in turn sells the same to the Tribal Welfare Educational Institutions at Rs.
  • “The quality of soaps is a top priority for us. Giri Detergent Soaps is the name under which we are marketing them, Soujanya continued.
  • She said: “After achieving break-even, we may get roughly Rs 800 per day compared to the daily wage.” She expressed confidence that the break-even threshold would be reached in the following four to five months. The unit has the capacity to produce 15,000 soaps each day and employs 10 extra people. The raw materials for the unit are supplied by the TSGCC.
  • According to G Pratap Reddy, divisional manager at TSGCC in Eturnagaram, the company plans to establish additional units for the economic empowerment of tribal women under the control of the ITDA in Eturnagaram.
