Bharat Bangla Maitri Bridge
In Tripura’s South district, the Bharat Bangla Maitri Bridge was opened by the prime minister.
Key Points :
- The Feni river, which runs between the Bangladeshi and Indian borders in Tripura State, is crossed by the Maitri Setu bridge.
- South Tripura is where Feni is originally from. The river travels into Bangladesh, joins the Bay of Bengal after passing through Sabroom Town on the Indian side.
- The 9 km long bridge connects Ramgarh and Sabroom in Tripura (in Bangladesh).
- The name “Maitri Setu” stands for expanding bilateral ties and cordial relationships between India and Bangladesh.
Cost and Who Built It:
- The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. undertook the construction at a cost of 133 crore.
- The Indian government owns all of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
- It is in charge of creating and maintaining India’s National Highways and Strategic Roads.
Significance:
- Agartala, the capital of Tripura, will now be the Indian city closest to an international sea port.
- Tripura will become the “Gateway of the North East” with access to Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port, which is only 80 kilometres away from the subroom.
- A long-standing and well-established Protocol on Transit and Trade through Inland Waterways exists between Bangladesh and India.
- It would act as a brand-new trade route between the two nations, promoting economic development in the Northeastern states. It will improve interpersonal communication.
